Sugar, Blood, Oxygen & the Brain

Most Nutritionists will tell you that you have to cut sugar from your diet. But the brain needs sugar more than any other organ in the body as an energy source.

The KIND of sugar is what is important, you want to reduce the refined, white sugars, and get your energy from complex carbohydrates like grains, nuts, and natural sources so that it goes into the blood more slowly without the drastic sugar highs and lows...lows that can cause mental confusion, irritability, inability to concentrate and even unusual behavior.

Your brain also needs a good oxygen supply..oxygen is carried to the brain by circulating blood...the red blood cells being the carriers. If you sit around and are not active, blood circulation slows, and you may become lethargic and groggy, but if you get up and take a brisk walk or do some moderate exercise, you feel energized and alert because the blood is now circulating more quickly and carrying oxygen to the brain.

Along with lack of exercise, many don't get enough blood oxygen to the brain because they MAY have atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, which is simply a narrowing of the arteries because of build up of plaque. This decreases the flow of blood, but can greatly increase the possibility of suffering a stroke.

MegaChel is a great product that has vitamins and nutrients that help the body to break down plaque in the arteries through a process called "oral chelation".

The Brain Likes that Smell - Essential Oils

When I was studying Anatomy and Physiology while taking my courses to be Certified as a Nutritionist, I could never get over what a miracle the body is...right down to the tiniest cell.

The brain is a remarkable part of the body...it is part of your nervous system, the "main computer" so to speak, but so much more.

Don't ever get the idea that your brain cannot be improved by "exercise" and nutrition, it can! Though genetics may play a part to some degree in how much exercise or nutritional help you will need (which is true for any part of the body by the way), a brain that isn't working "up to par" does not have to stay that way.

Essential fatty acids are important to the brain, during pregnancy and in early childhood. Children should be getting HEALTHY fats in their diets, as should adults...fats like those found in nuts (caution: peanuts are a high allergen for some), seeds, flax and natural butter from grass fed beef.

The brain needs sugar, and uses more of it than any other organ in the body...but it is best not to count on the kind that comes from a candy bar, white sugars, white flour, etc., which causes extreme sugar highs and lows (hypoglycemia) which finally take their toll on the pancreas, and other organs of the body. Eating fruits, complex carbohydrates like high-fiber grainy breads, high fiber cereal, grains, and nuts will provide the body with a more steady, even supply of sugar, as the carbohydrates are turned into sugar more slowly. Eating your daily quota of food spread out through the day is a good idea too, don't skip meals.

The sense of smell can help the brain through smelling certain botanicals either in the form of essential oils or in their natural state. Here are a few examples:

  • Rosemary helps those who are struggling with memory loss, feeling down about life, depression;
  • Pine helps with alertness, anxiety, mental tiredness, trouble concentrating.
  • Lemon helps with feelings of confusion and lethargy, the circulatory system.
  • Lavendar is used by some for headaches, stress and trouble sleeping.
  • Peppermint helps with concentration and fainting episodes.
  • Thyme helps with mental clarity, makes you feel "alive".

The oils listed above are just some of the oils that are beneficial. You can apply them topically to the temples, forehead, behind the ears or neck, or you can use them in a bath or with a Nebulizing Diffuser. Do not get them in the eye. Some may require a carrier oil to dilute as they are too strong to come in contact with the skin. I can help you determine how to use essential oils safely.

Mom, Cancer & Paw Paw

About 21 years ago, a little after Mother's Day I was just leaving a retreat for women, and received a call that my Mom had been rushed to the hospital in pain. Her blood work was terrible, liver swollen, lungs holding fluid, and more, and to make a long story short, within 24 hours she was diagnosed with acute leukemia. For weeks she was in the hospital, and for some time after received treatment for this cancer, but the ending of our story is a happy one. She went into a complete remission, and is still with us today, thanks to good care from her doctors, and answers to many prayers.

I am sure that there is not a single person reading this that has not in some way been touched by cancer, if not personally, than by knowing someone with this disease.

I do not have any quick or magic cures to offer you, but I do have something to tell you about that has been helpful. First, know that I am not a doctor, and that I focus on things from the perspective of nutrition. I also believe God answers the prayers of those who put their faith and trust in the One true God, our creator, who knows more about our bodies than we ever could.

Among the many plants that God has given us that benefit our health, He has provided a wonderful plant called Paw Paw. Paw paw contains properties that deprive cancer cells of the energy they need to grow and reproduce, and unlike chemotherapy, it does this without harming healthy cells. This is not just another "magic bullet", it is something that has been studied for many years.

Paw paw contains compounds called "annonaceous acetogenins" that, in layman's terms, "convince" cells to self-destruct.

When you use Paw paw, it has to be used correctly, there are herbs and supplements you should avoid while using it, and if you are already in treatment, that has to be taken into consideration. I do have a lot more information, including more scientific explanations, about this wonderful herb that I can send to you by email...the information is in pdf format, opened by Adobe which most computers have.
