Reasons to Eat and Not Avoid Carbohydrates

Because of some diet trends, people tend to avoid carbohydrates. Depending upon what you've been reading or hearing, you may be getting to the point that you think all carbohydrates are bad.

Personally, I DO NOT like eating programs that go to an extreme in any area. I want to share with you some reasons why Carbohydrates are an important part of your diet.

  • They are an energy source. The first 1/2 hour or so of your exercise or walking program will use a good percentage of carbohydrates, and an intense workout can use all of the carbs you eat, this is why it is important to eat carbohydrates before exercise. Eat them at least couple of hours before you do an intense workout so your food will properly digest.
  • Carbohydrates are a good source of water. When you think carbohydrates, you probably think of pasta, bread, cookies, and cake. Fruits and certain vegetables, for example corn and peas, are a great source of carbohydrates, and they "hydrate" you with some water as well.
  • I'm sure you've read that complex carbohydrates are the best carbohydrates for you...these are your grains, legumes, and such...because they contain more fiber. These are sources of "good" carbohydrates, as opposed to the "white" foods like sugar, refined flour, white rice, and most pastas.

So don't avoid carbohydrates completely, eat balances, eat well.
