Is Eating Pasta Making You Fat?

I confess that one of my favorite comfort foods is Pasta. It doesn't matter whether it is spaghetti, ziti, macaroni, lasagna, or any other size shape or color, I love them all.

Your comfort food may be different, but generally, comfort foods seem to be the ones that put on the most weight. Now that the weather is getting cold outside, this is even more of a problem for me. It seems that I'm drawn away from the salads of warm weather days to the heavier carbohydrate rich foods, the very foods that put more weight on me than any other food if I am not active enough to burn the carbs off.

There are tools to help those of us who love our Pasta. Here are a few suggestions:

1. This may seem obvious, but read on...look at the box that the Pasta comes in. On it you will find how many portions are in the box. 

It may surprise you to find how much more than the suggested amount you are eating, I was. In our super-size-it society, we are clueless as to what real portions are, even though all of our packaged foods indicate what a true portion is. 

2. If you don't find it easy to portion pasta based on the packaging, there are tools to help. One example is the Healthy Pasta Portions Basket. There are other helpful portion control items made by the same manufacturer and other ideas at the link provided.

3. When you eat a meal that contains a reduced amount of Pasta, add more meat sauce to "fill" you. Lean protein is less likely to increase weight...and blood sugar, by the way...that comes to mind as my husband is a diabetic. I make my own meat sauce using my own very simple recipe which is as follows:

Grass Fed Beef and Organic Fire Roasted Tomato Pasta Sauce Recipe:

  • 1 lb. lean grass fed ground beef or other organic ground meat
  • 1 28 oz. can of Organic Fire Roasted Chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 Small or medium onion chopped
  • 1 chopped green pepper
  • A few cloves of fresh garlic chopped
  • Optional: Garlic powder to taste
  • Optional: Onion powder to taste
  • Add meat, onions, peppers, and garlic cloves to a oiled pan (I use cast iron) and brown all together until no red meat remains and vegetables are soft. 
  • Add the can of crushed fire roasted tomatoes, bring to a simmer, cover, and simmer for about 1/2 hour, stirring occasionally. If you use Garlic Powder or Onion Powder, this is the time to stir it in.
Again, unless you have used a lot of oil, or the meat is very fatty, you are better off getting more protein than carbohydrates, so I always say I have a little pasta with my meat sauce.
